Early last month, we posted about a 103-year-old woman who narrowly escaped eviction from her home after a threat of foreclosure. We also reported a similar situation in which a 101-year-old woman was promised she could move back into her foreclosed home after being evicted last fall. Apparently she will be forced to leave after all.
Despite the federal government's backtrack following the foreclosure, officials are now saying the elderly woman won't be permitted to return to her home because of allegedly unsanitary conditions.
The woman was evicted last September after her 65-year-old son apparently failed to pay property taxes. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development foreclosed on the home. News reports showed the woman's belongings placed outside her home.
Only days later, she was told she could return, but now a HUD spokesperson says that an inspection revealed the house was unsuitable for a person to live in. According to Boston.com, he says that the home is not sanitary and it's "certainly not suitable for anyone to live in, especially not a 101-year-old mother."
That isn't much comfort to the elderly woman, who has accepted a friend's offer to stay in a room in the friend's home. She says, "Here I am, 100 years old, and don't have a home. Oh Lord, help me."
It's unlikely the woman will be left in the lurch. While HUD doesn't want to pay to repair the home, it might acquire help from other agencies to fix up the residence.
